For our capstone project at CMU, my team was assigned to work with GE Healthcare on redesigning the UI and presentation of information within radiology software.
We’ve spent our spring focused on research and visioning, with the summer dedicated to prototyping towards the goal of delivering a functional prototype by the end of August.
We’ve relied most strongly upon Contextual Interviews, where we will sit with radiologists and observe them working in their environment, interrupting to ask questions and clarify assumptions. After each interview, we consolidate our findings into a set of interview notes which then form the basis of an affinity diagram. Over the spring we’ve conducted 18 contextual interviews along with a number of phone interviews and sit-down sessions at GE offices to observe their software, and presented our research findings in a comprehensive presentation to GE.
We developed a set of radiology-specific heuristics to be used within a Heuristic Evaluation on GE’s current software offering. These heuristics will also serve as design guidelines as we prototype throughout the summer.
The process has been a great opportunity to work hand in hand within a large organization with multiple moving parts. Healthcare was not something I was familiar with prior to this project, so our whole team has had to pick up a mountain of domain knowledge very quickly in order to be useful and recognize insights in our research.
